Instructor's Message

Fourth leg of the tour

Supposedly, mogul skiing is hard on your knees. I hear this from non-mogul skiers all the time. Even though I've skied bump runs for many years, I have no problems with my knees, nor have I experienced any injuries.

The reason is that I learned how to ski moguls gradually over time and in an environment I could control. I also realized earlier on that if I was to get good at mogul skiing, I needed to become stronger in the muscle groups that supported the knees.

Hence, I learned to use my quads, hips, and glutes as shock absorbers during impact, which transfers most of the force away from the knees. I also developed a number of techniques to tame my natural aggression so I could control my speed.

Oh that humbling feeling!

If you try to attack a steep mogul field with a gung-ho attitude and not much bump experience, no line, no technique, weak-legged, and all tensed up, you will crash and burn, more often than not. Your stance will be too tall and you'll probably be back on your heels, which means you will gain too much speed, and then ski out of control.

Have you ever experienced this feeling before? Humbling, isn't it! Well, in this situation the terrain is definitely in control! It's ok. We've all been there at one time or another.

For sure, you need to keep the gung-ho attitude, but jettison the rest. A positive attitude with the proper mind set is essential for mogul skiing.
